ROME EASTER WEEK PILGRIMAGE 2024
https://www.testaccina.com/easter-in-rome/
You should read this article by Isobel Lee because it gives you a good idea of the diligent exuberance surrounding Easter Week in Rome and celebration options available for public participation. From Palm Sunday, the Holy Triduum, and Easter Sunday, Rome is ablaze in flowers and colors and outdoor events.
The Outside Palm Sunday Procession and Mass are delightful to watch for the beautifully braided Palms. If you ever braided Palms in Catholic School like I did this sight will be especially meaningful for you. Some of the Palm braids are more elaborate than those I learned but I learned enough to identify and delight in the old standbys! It’s in St. Peter’s Square and the Square is packed. Early morning rising needed here to get a good breakfast and good front row seats.
Maundy Thursday is a wonderful day of Catholic events and celebrations. Isobel mentioned a 7 P.M. foot washing ceremony at the Anglican Church in Rome. There’s another touching ceremony at La Cappella di Santa Monica, an Augustinian Church just outside the Colonnades at the south end of St. Peter’s Square. Priests from around the world meet here at Eastertime and they bring their song and instruments with them!
The Altars of the Sepulchers involve tripping from Church to Church to visit the finest and best Altar a Church puts on display, including its relics. If you have preferences we should start with these.
Good Friday holds a 3 PM afternoon Via Crucis procession at the Testaccio Mountain and a 9:15 PM nighttime Via Crucis procession at the Colosseo. We can do both. Or we can go to La Cappella di Santa Monica again in the evening for the Augustinian take on Via Crucis. I won’t give anything away, but it’s not like anything I had ever experienced and you’ll always remember their serious commitment they share with us. The Priests make a bonfire in their courtyard and light our candles in a procession to the Cappella, so gentle, loving and touching of how they make room for our participation at every event.
La Cappella di Santa Monica has a bright and brilliant Mass of Song and music on Holy Saturday that will hold you spellbound all evening. Their best singers intensify the Glory that is coming and they keep this intense pace up all through the Mass. You’ll always remember the Belief and Faith they display. 8:30 PM is an Easter Vigil Papal Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica. All Papal Masses inside the Basilica require tickets and to acquire tickets I will need a count of Pilgrims wanting to attend this event as early as possible. Papal Mass tickets are in high demand from Pilgrims around the World!
10:00 AM Easter Sunday Mass is inside the Basilica and led by the Pope. I’ll need an early count to ask for tickets as early as I can, as soon as reservations open up online at the Vatican website. There are other Easter Sunday Masses we can attend if tickets are not available.
Easter Monday means a picnic somewhere! There is a 12:00 Noon Pasquetta in St. Peter’s Square.
I’m leading this Easter Week Pilgrimage from Palm Sunday March 24 through Easter Monday April 1, 2024. Lodging and dining begin March 23 and go through Easter Monday April 1, 2024. The Pilgrimage ends at checkout on Tuesday April 2nd.
However, you can take short Easter Week Pilgrimages! Just tell me the time section you’d like to have such as Palm Sunday only, or the Holy Triduum only, or Easter Sunday only. It’s Ok to pick and choose your Easter experience in Rome. There’s enough here to give you an Easter you’ll carry with you for a Lifetime! I can promise an exhilarating Eastertime in Rome. Just a reminder that I work only with hotels, not Bed n Breakfasts, not hostels and not convents. Only hotels. I arrange for lodging and all meals and all transportation.
